CHN is rooted in women's health, beginning as a group of family planning clinics.

Our Women’s Healthcare Services

CHN has been providing healthcare services specifically tailored to women since the 1960’s. This dedication to women’s health was cemented with CHN’s founding as the Community Family Planning Council in 1981. Though we have since expanded our mission and changed our name, we have never lost our steadfast commitment to family planning and reproductive health.

Today, women and men receive individualized and confidential family planning and reproductive advice and medical care. Whether a client wants to learn about contraception or abstinence, they will receive quality medical care and counseling on a broad range of options.

Gynecological Care
All centers offer routine gynecological exams that include the PAP test, internal examination and STD screening. Staff are trained to provide cervical care procedures for women with certain abnormal PAP test results, including colposcopy, LEEP and cryosurgery. These procedures examine tissue, confirm PAP test results, and treat the abnormal tissue if necessary.

STD Services
All CHN centers offer prevention, education, diagnosis, and treatment for STDs. All individuals who request to be tested for STDs are also offered the option of being tested for HIV.

Family Planning
CHN offers health education in regards to family planning options, including options counseling and contraceptive counseling. We offer a wide range of birth control options including condoms, the pill, the patch, and the IUD. Emergency contraception is available at all our centers.

Prenatal Care
Physicians and certified nurse midwives provide prenatal care at all centers. Patients receive care that is coordinated with the providers at the hospitals they have chosen for their delivery. Prenatal care is provided under the NY State Prenatal Care Assistance Program (PCAP) guidelines.

  • Centering Pregnancy Program

In addition, CHN is piloting a new prenatal care model called The Centering Pregnancy Program. Centering Pregnancy is an exciting way for women to get prenatal care and is offered at our Queens, Bronx, CABS, and Helen B. Atkinson Health Centers. Centering Pregnancy is a unique approach to engaging women (and their partners) in prenatal care and strengthening the health education component of care.

This unique program developed by the Centering Pregnancy and Parenting Association brings women out of exam rooms and into groups for their care. Women receive a clinical exam and nutritional assessment with their healthcare provider. Following the initial visit, they are invited to join with 6-10 other women with similar expected dates of delivery for group self-care activities. The group meets every month for the first four months and then bi-weekly. Participants discuss topics of interest related to pregnancy, childbirth, parenting, breastfeeding, and personal growth. In addition, women participate in self-care activities, including measuring their own blood pressure and weight, entering data on their personal tracking chart, and completing self-assessment sheets.
